I’m not sure who is going to go batsh*t crazy first – me or Copper. This summer, our grass outside is growing so well, any time spent on it flares up his grass allergies.
He’s now resorted to hiding from me so he can continue on with excessively licking his paws. He will also start doing this when he is anticipating going outside. He knows it won’t be fun for him when he comes back in.
His paws are looking so sore. Not bleeding, though, just tender. Which makes it worse and easier for the pollen to get absorbed into his feet.
It’s annoying as h*ll…for both of us.
I have to touch him on his back to get him to stop, otherwise he’s so locked into the work at paw he won’t stop.
And the NOISE he makes is maddening…
Post Inspiration – Copper, the poor thing.
PS – Do share…do you know of any home remedy ideas on how to help him? Does a bath for a dog that is terrified of them help? He has a vet appointment soon, but last year they just told us it was bad for all dogs this time of year. 🙁
Dog shoes….that’s all…………dog shoes. It is even funnier watching them walk
LOL – I can barely get his harness on so I can take him for a walk! For such a little guy, he puts up quite the fight!
Maybe keep a bowl of water handy near the door. Dunk each paw in the water on the way back in.
Thanks for that idea – since he’s so little, I’ve been catching him as he comes in and putting him in the wash tub and soaking his feet. He still licks them, but not as long as before!! Sigh…poor thing.
Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately, I know way more about this than I’d like. Our dog had horrible allergies and was literally licking his feet until they cracked and bled. We tried EVERYTHING. The dog shoes shown above – yes. He pulled them off. Wrapped and bandaged with bad tasting stuff. Changes of food. A dog paw washing bottle that we kept at the back door and washed each paw on his way back in. Long story short: We finally took him to the vet school at Michigan State and they tested his allergies. The list of allergies was/is three pages long. 😫 So he is on pricey, weird food and he gets an allergy shot once a month with a formula created just for him at MSU. In the process, we spent almost $7K on him that year. Yeah. I hope you can solve it more easily than that. (And, yes, that noise is GROSS.) Poor Copper. Poor you.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s a horror story! I doubt our vet has that kind of testing to do. It does seem to be seasonal, with the grass, but who knows. Today I started soaking his paws in water after he comes in, and he seems to stop the licking faster than before. $7K…………oh, my… Yikes. The noise is driving us both crazy! Thank you for your sympathy. Your dog is lucky to have you as parents. Hope he/she’s better now that you’ve figured out the source of the itching?!
He’s fine now…just getting old. 😢 He actually comes running when DH gets out his monthly needle and syringe, as he knows he always gets a treat just after his shot. It clearly doesn’t hurt him. LOL.
I know the getting old phase – that’s so sweet he likes the treat. Pavlov strikes yet again! Glad you’ve found something to help him live well in his elder years. 🙂
snaps of hummingbirds are so hard to take.
They do let me catch them via a view through the window…sometimes…!
Wow Shelley, I wish I had a suggestion that would help Copper, poor guy. i hope your vet can help him. 😩
Thanks, John, me too. Poor little guy!
This is really sad! I had no idea that dogs could suffer from allergies. I hope the solution is (relatively) easy for you and for Copper.
Thank you, it is really sad, and frustrating. The solution is a hard cold frost, and none of us really want the ‘s’ word or longer ‘w’ word yet. He’s a bit better when I soak his feet in water after he comes in, at least he doesn’t lick as long afterward. But he’s still doing it………… Grr.
Darn, on the allergies, Shelley. Unfortunately, I don’t have any answers, except hugs.
Thank you for your empathy and hugs, we appreciate both!
Poor Copper – well I would suggest those dog boots that some use in Winter to keep the salt on the sidewalks from getting into dog’s paws/pads. But my aunt bought a Santa Claus outfit for her dog once and the outfit had black vinyl boots … her dog just stood there, planted in place – he would not walk at all. So that would probably be the same for Copper. How about the suggestion I gave you last year for the patch of artificial turf to buy for Winter when it was so cold and snowy. You could get a few of them, one for on the deck in Winter or even in the Summer, but move it away in the warmer months? Wash it down well with the hose for this time of year. I know they make them for apartments where people leave the dogs during the day and nowhere for the dog to go out so it is a necessity. Here is one from Chewy and also available on Amazon.

Yeah, you’re right, the boots would be a no-go for Copper. He hates his feet being touched. We’ve been pondering the idea – thank you for sharing the link. It might be the perfect time to try one of those tinkle turf things…what a name!
No, the boots are likely not good for any dog, but they do recommend them for salty sidewalks because not everyone uses the products that are safe for dogs’ paws. I think the tinkle turf works for this time of year and Copper’s allergies, a torrential rain day and in Winter especially. Have a couple of them to rotate to be able to thoroughly clean one while the other one is in use.
We’re seriously pondering what to do for him. I appreciate your concern for him, I’ll keep you posted!
Thanks Shelley, I’ve taken a liking to Copper from afar. 🙂
He appreciates your adoration :-)!
Your poor pup! Have you found a remedy yet?
Thank you, it’s been a challenge. We haven’t found a perfect solution, I think part of it is anxiety? I’ve resorted to washing his feet when he comes back in the house. He hates that, too, but he licks less than before, so it seems to be helping some. It was 46 degrees this morning – the frost will help. But none of us want winter yet.
