Nature’s fix – spring is good for your brain

I glanced out the windows yesterday and noticed my flower beds are finally starting to appear through the melted snow.  I’m anxious to see if my perennials survived the long winter.  And I’m waiting for the third snow to fall on Robin’s tail before the official spring arrives.  They seem to know better when it will arrive than the calendar does.

I believe in process.  I believe in four seasons.  I believe that winter’s tough, but spring’s coming.  I believe that there’s a growing season.  And I think that you realize that in life, you grow.  You get better.  – Steve Southerland

Today’s the first day of spring, and the prediction for weather is a typical Wisconsin seasonal like winter day.  No snow is predicted, (YIPPEE) but the clouds are expected to reign over the sun and keep the day in the balmy low 30’s.  Oh, joy, another day to don the winter coat!

In winter, I plot and plan.  In spring, I move. – Henry Rollins

The dreary weather doesn’t stop me from dreaming of digging in the dirt and planting annuals.  I normally plant marigolds, they are my go-to, easy to care for, Dubious MinimalistTM flowers.

But this year, I aim to be more adventurous with what I plant in the beds around the yard.  It would be so nice to create a bouquet with a variety of flowers.  All the identical marigolds that I’ve grown in my garden over the years are becoming boring to me.  If only I was a better gardener.  I’ve been known to let the weeds win.

I’m inspired to find more time to spend with the flower beds this year.  After I started reading The Nature Fix  – it has gotten me to reflect on why I’ve had the blues this winter.  I’m intrigued by the concepts presented in the book and am convinced a nature fix is what I need to boost my spirits.

aNFCapture

Here’s Team Moab’s overarching hypothesis:  After days of wandering in a place like this, resting the executive branch and watching the clouds drift across an endless sky, good shit happens to your brain.

This winter has been so damn cold, so I stayed inside.  I’ve spent too much time on my phone, on my computer, and on my standing mat in front of my desk, closed in by my 4 office walls.  Apparently, none of that is good for my spirits or my ability to think well.  My brain isn’t using all its parts, it’s stuck in the frontal lobe!  Crap!

I need to grab my gardening boots and get outside and recharge my brain.

Until I reflected on how I’ve longed for adventures outside, I didn’t realize how much I had been missing the fresh air and the smells that blow around in the warm breezes.

I know Copper has missed it, too.

We both can’t wait to romp around outside to discover new finds as the season gives way to green grass, flowers, birds, ants, bees, and endless treasures for thee.

And…I’ll be damned – I haven’t even missed the dandelions.  I must be sick!

  1. I used to have large gardens at my home in Northern Illinois …. now, living in a condo, I still do some plants, but it’s not near as fulfilling. I do tropical plants in pots, like elephant ears and canna.

how about trying some zinnias? They always seem so happy to me. They are easy and they come in a riot of colors.

    1. That’s great that you still have a garden, even if smaller! Yes, zinnias are what came to mind to me, too. I smile every time I see them, I adore all the different colors too! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  2. I wish my back, hip and knees would allow me to spend time in the garden! I haven’t tended to mine in a long time. It is a big mess. I miss the beauty.

    1. Aw, I wish your back, hip, and knees could tolerate it too! A job for the Mr.? 😉 Thank you for sharing your thoughts – I know you’ll get outside to admire the beauty and the fresh air, that works too!

      1. My guy is too busy, Judo 3 times a week, sunday morning run, climbing ladders all day 5 days a week. Maybe next year, ha! I went to the garden center today. Beautiful stuff there.

        1. Oy, he’s a busy guy! I’m glad you went to the garden center to get a dose of greens & colors!! Good thinking!

    1. Aw, thank you, Ali! Nice to hear from you – a fellow sun-worshipper – you’re always welcome here in my quirky zone!! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I long for it too and wish the wind was less harsh right now. At least we got out this past weekend for some outdoor adventures of feeding ducks and going to the park. It was a nice teaser, but I yearn for the flowers and budding trees!

    1. I hear you! This past Saturday was so nice…and then it turned cold, and windy, and not so nice! Eventually, we’ll be celebrating the flowers and budding trees! I’ll celebrate with you!!!
