My yellow belt philosophy on life

From the time I was little, I’ve adored the color yellow.  That and the sky blue crayon in the Crayola box are my favs.  It’s no wonder I have walls in my house painted both colors.  While the blue calms me, the yellow evokes happiness in me.

I’m drawn to it.  I can’t help but smile when I see something yellow.

Even if it makes me sad, I still pause to notice something yellow.

My daughters didn’t cringe like I thought they would when I sent them a Snap of me wearing the yellow belt.  It was my youngest, she had left it behind for me to find here in my empty nest.  She bought it for a Halloween costume she wore when she dressed up as Lucille Ball.  I didn’t have the heart to part with it.  When I discovered it, my face was beaming with a huge smile.  Could I?  Should I keep it?

I wrapped it around my waist to make sure it would fit.  It did.  So I hung it in my closet to see if it could survive the test of time until I felt brave enough to wear it.

Then I went shopping with a friend who encourages my quirkiness.  When I found yellow pants and a yellow shirt, I told her I was going to try them on.  She didn’t look too surprised, but said, “Oh, my, that’s a lot of yellow.”  I ditched the pants.  They weren’t as comfortable as I hoped they would be.

But I bought the yellow shirt.  I just loved it from the moment I saw it.

I remembered how my daughter told me that gray compliments yellow well, so it will look great with your gray hair.  So yeah, I bought it and I’ve worn it, of course, it was with the yellow belt.

I love how it matches the yellow belt.  Score.ME!

And it fits my philosophy on life too.  I approach life like a novice who’s ready to take on any discovery mission I’m presented with (within reason, of course), I feel supported by my official yellow belt.

And I’m supported by a man who likes yellow shirts too.  He encourages my photography habits.  No matter where those adventures take us, whether it’s on a beach in Jamaica or on a walk on our country road, he’ll pause with me to make sure I catch the shot.

“Yes, smarty pants, I did!”

I like to wander around by myself in our yard, or with Copper who’s never too far behind me.  I wonder if the Trail Cam caught me taking a picture too?!

I even liken to pause for lichen.  The old decaying kind of yellow is fascinating to me.

Or pause to discover new sprouts that have subtle shades of yellow.  If you look at them from the right angle, that is.

Or tiny sprouts on curly branches of a twig I planted just to see what would happen.  It has grown steadily every spring since I planted it 7 years ago.

Even seeing chives from different angles make me smile.

I’m one to notice vivid red lichen that stops me in my tracks too.

My yellow belt philosophy on life provides me with enough of a background to know when I see something I love or I am spending time with someone I love…

PS – Isn’t that belt to die for?!  Or not be caught dead wearing it?!  Do you like lichen too?  Which photo were you drawn to?  Did you notice the ‘pants’ in the tree stump?

  1. I love yellow too. Forsythias! Daffodils! Yellow roses! Bathroom towels! I didn’t save it, but I had a leather belt much like yours back in high school. And a yellow watch band – the interchangeable kind.
I also agree – it does match nicely with gray. Fun post to start the week 🙂

    1. YAY! I love those flowers too – and the yellow centers of white daisies. My daughter found the belt at Saver’s Thrift Store… 🙂 Wouldn’t be funny if it had been your belt and found its way to her the same time in her life. I have such an imagination. Yes, Gray and Yellow, surprisingly fun combination. Glad to hear you enjoyed the post :-)!

  2. I did notice the pants in the tree stump! The belt works great with the gray. I’ll be it looks terrific on. Love the pics of you and your mister on the beach. So cute!

    1. LOL – glad you noticed the shorts! The belt is a touch of quirky fun for me. I love your YouTube video – way to share your world with us. I can’t wait to see what you do for Z!

  3. Your philosophy is great. It rings true to me. Yellow is a color that seems to bring out the cheerful in those people who understand its charms.

    1. Thanks, Ally. From the contacts that I’ve had with you, you strike me as a yellow enthusiast and your charming wit is heartwarming to me.

  4. Ha ha – I did think “pants” and I think the yellow belt is nice. I like bright primary colors, because I see them clearly, as opposed to those colors with oddball names (like in the Crayola box of 64). I also really like people who aren’t afraid to wear what they like.

    1. Yay – glad you saw the pants too! LOL. Vivid colors are easier to see, that’s for sure. Those box of 64 crayons were fun, but could be overwhelming. I’m feeling a bit more free to wear quirky things…now that the kids aren’t here to turn me around and go back to change.

      1. I bought a new summer hat last year, and I sent my daughter a photo before wearing it to an agricultural fair with her.

  5. All the photos are lovely, but I was hoping to see you sporting your new outfit! I did notice the pants in the stump. I especially loved the lichen photos. I love observation through the lens.

    1. Thank you, Maggie, glad you enjoyed the photos. Lichen are so interesting to me. I totally forgot to take a picture of me in the outfit, I was in a rush out the door. I’m positive I’ll wear it again. I’ll figure out a way to throw a picture of it on a post. 😉

  6. I love yellow too Shelley – so sunny looking and always brings cheer. The sunny yellow belt matches the top perfectly and looks good with the gray as well. The photos were great as always and the lichen were interesting to see, especially the red color. One more letter to go – whew!

  7. My kitchen is ‘Whispering Yellow’. My other rooms are all a derivative of yellow, as found on the same paint chip chart. That’s how much I like yellow. Next, I decorate in blue. Did you know that yellow and blue are the colors of Tuscany? That’s why I love the combo so much. They make me happy.
    Great post. Love your photos.

    1. I knew we were alike in more ways than one! I have yellow and blue in my kitchen too. I like the Tuscany idea…I’m ready to update (just with paint) and I was toying around with painting it like the colors on a beach, but Tuscany themed sounds like it might be doable too?! I agree, those colors make me happy too. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I hope you’re feeling much better now!

  8. I love your yellow belt philosophy. I can’t wear yellow but my husband and I always settle on a gold-ish yellow for our living room walls–every house, every time. I love the way it looks against our wooden furniture and brightens up even the cloudiest of days outside. Lovely post and pics, as always!

    1. Thank you, Rebecca! I’ve rarely gravitated to yellow, especially this yellow, maybe a pastel one, but I’m liking it more and more. Yes, wooden furniture looks great against it, you two have excellent choices in decorating!

  9. Happy to have stumbled across your blog Shelley! Entertaining quirks here! Saw the ‘pants’ right away. Thanks for the laughs!

  10. I love your chirpy, cheerful outlook on life. I too often describe my ways as quirky, but I think following your inner guidance is true freedom. Thanks for sharing your yellow belt philosophy on life. It really resonated with me!

    1. Aw, thank you, I appreciate your kind words of encouragement. Thank you for stopping by to read my post, your visit brightened my day!
