Hello out there, it’s me – checking in with you to see if you, too, are successful in completing the first month of the year right on target with your goals?
My goals included writing on my blog daily. I’ve succeeded in that goal. Other goals, well, not so much. As I stare here at the blinking line, trying to figure out what to write for the cavity prompt, I notice a new batch of gnats flitting in front of my face. I swear I can hear them chatting to each other as they taunt me.
“Looky here, here we are, we fooled you once again!”
Bastards…they are smaller than the ones I’ve been seeing of late, so that means new eggs have hatched. They feed on something in the soil and then lay eggs and then fly around. They apparently have no problem filling their cavity and meeting their goals. I keep telling myself, I’ll perfect the catching of them in February. That’s next month, I’ve got time. I take it one.day.at.a.time.
If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content. – Leo Tolstoy
It is the official end of January, TODAY, and a time to reflect on how perfect the month was. NOT – I don’t know about you, but I’m fricken thankful I didn’t set too high of expectations in the form of New Year’s Resolutions.
I ain’t got time for that kind of stuff. Reminds me of a video from 5 years ago. And it also reminds me I need to learn how to embed videos into my posts. (Hint…hint…that’s where you come in – leave a comment below!) But, you can use the old-fashioned technique by clicking the words below, you’ll get there, it’s not too scary to leave this page – do come back though…I’ve got more happy news to report below. (Post-post update – a little sprout gave me the hot tip and now I know how to do the videos!!!!)
(Thanks for coming back!) Until I learn about embedding videos, I’m content with photography – and learning from my mistakes. Like, when my adoration for capturing the moon gets me to grab my camera, and I rarely get a great shot. My most imperfect shots are early in the morning when I try to do so in a semi-alert state. The results prove I haven’t had enough coffee. Or the right equipment. (You had to be there…it was gorgeous as it was shining on the snow, glistening along with the stars…). There are so many things wrong with this picture, but it humbles me, so I’m good with that! Some things I do get time for!
Now, where was I? Oh yeah, trying to figure out what to write about the cavity prompt. What immediately comes to mind is Dessy. She loves to fill her cavity. And she’s attuned to any sound resembling food or her treat bag.
She’s not particularly fond of popcorn – unlike me, I find it is a healthy mid-day snack. So in the middle of the day when my knight in shining armor pops a fresh batch and delivers it to me, I, of course, accept the bowl willingly and munch away as I work. (I tell ya, he spoils me!). I wasn’t quite satisfied with one bowl yesterday, so I filled another one and sat it on the edge of my table while I was working. I turned abruptly and knocked the full bowl on to the floor. I swear I heard Dessy stir in the other room.
Dammit…time to get the vacuum and clean up the mess.
As I rounded the corner, I glanced up and yep, she did stir. There she was staring at me. Guess she’s wasn’t happy to be awakened from her afternoon siesta?
After the commotion from the speed vacuuming session ended, and no sign of real food involved, Dessy settled back in and slept the rest of the afternoon. I finished up work, while I waited for the better meal to appear magically at the table, right on schedule by the King of the kitchen. (I thought it was best to skip refilling the popcorn bowl, three too many bowls isn’t the best choice).
The wait was worth it! (Sorry gals, he’s taken…!)
And…for dessert, I grabbed the bag of Tostitos for me, and a healthy version for the Mr. (When you eat healthy meals, desserts are acceptable, right?) Dessy felt the need to snuggle up to Mr.’s bag of chips, perhaps in hopes of getting some? Nah, I think she thought the bag sounded like the bag her treats come in.
Dessy’s glare at me reminded me I shouldn’t have time for the half bag of chipperos I was munching away on – they aren’t really part of my Dubious Minimalist Skinny Jeans Diet TM. I’ve been less than perfect at following that this week. I’ve been wearing sweatpants instead. It’s the tax papers and receipts that need finalizing…I’m driven crazy – right into the bad habit zone until they are done the end of this month! (That’s today…sh*t…I might have to push the deadline back a few days…).
And there you have it. I’m true to myself at the end of the notorious goal setting month of JANUARY – I’m happy to report imperfections are part of the process. Leo T was a smart one I tell ya! His quote is perfect for an entry for One-Liner Wednesday!
Do tell – did you set NYR’s and stick to them? Are you happy with not setting too high of goals? Are you ready to try again in February – it’s a shorter month, odds are better? And, if you know how to figure out WordPress settings for embedding a video – I’m all ears!?
Embedding a video? Girrlll! LoL!! Each day I learn something new, and I swear, I practically celebrate. It’s Christmas every day. The life we have, or once had, who knew?

LOL! You’re so RIGHT!! I’m so glad to have people like you on the journey of discovery with me!!
Shelley, first off, that first photo of Dessy is precious.
I used to make resolutions, probably somewhere in my 30’s, but quickly figured out that I suck at keeping them. I am, however, in the process of losing weight/inches using a Ketogenic diet (very low carb, high fat). I’ve lost over 30 lbs but MANY inches to where I can fit into size 12 jeggings from Old Navy and a size L in their sweaters. I’ve also cut out 99% of my alcohol consumption this month, which for me is an amazing feat. So have I met some goals? You betcha. I’ll just keep on keepin’ on.
Thank you, Dessy appreciates compliments :-)! I think my 30’s is when I got smart too. Congratulations on your successes with your diet. Jeggings from Old Navy & their sweaters – I love those too!! You are correct – alcohol has lots of empty calories. I’m impressed with your successes and meeting goals!! Yes, keep on keepin’ on and stay in touch – I look forward to reading more about your journey!
Thanks Shelley — you KNOW we’d be fast friends if we lived close!
You’re absolutely right about that!!!
A second bowl of popcorn but only one cookie! lol! I have done pretty good with my healthy eating lifestyle since Jan 1st. That is the only NYR I made.
LOL – thanks for remembering! I’m a salt fanatic – cookies aren’t usually a temptation until the holidays. Congrats on holding true to your NYR, and great job being realistic in what you wanted to set as achievable goals!
I set goals for myself for January. I even wrote them down.
Then I fell ill with the flu.
That changed everything.
All I wanted to do was get better but it wasn’t happening as fast as I wanted it to do.
Which make me think.
Which made me realize.
Without my good health, all the plans in the world were meaningless.
So, my new focus for January became the chant “I can do this!”
Meaning: I can get well!
That’s all I concentrated on.
And thankfully, that’s all I accomplished.
I am well.
I’m so happy to read you set realistic goals and that you attained like you said the most important – get well and that makes the rest easier to implement or change. I’m glad you’re well too! Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I wish you continued health and happiness!
Thank goodness I’m not looking for perfection, Shelley! Then again, friends tell me I’m a perfectionist. Not sure what to do with that conflicting information…
I love the photo of Dessy looking up at you. She’s so adorable.
Mary, we are two peas in a pod on that perfectionist problem! I guess we shall embrace it as a compliment??!?! Thank you, for the Dessy compliment. She was pretty darn cute in her semi-alert, what-the-heck-are-you-doing look! Just like you, I love cats and their poses. Thanks for stopping by – hope all is well in your new office.
Hi Shelley! I don’t make new year’s resolutions because I always break my promise. I call it more of it like goals so I can motivate myself more 😄. Your cat is so cute with that expression 😊.
Hi Winnie! Nice to hear from you 🙂 I agree, that’s the same thing that happens to me. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for the compliment for Dessy, she adores the attention ;-)!
You’re welcome Shelley! By the way the GFTH-GFTB is a really nice idea! I’d love to participate 🙂
