How do you know when you’re feeling comfortable in your world? How do you know that it isn’t all about making sure you’re not stretching your waist more than necessary and that it’s more about finding where life feels just right (at the moment)? And, that you’re happy?
We all have different moments that make us feel that good old, warm, huggy, happy kind of way.
For me, it is when we’re together as a family. No matter where we are, or what we’re doing, we feel happy together.
And there is always food and hugs (and possibly wine) involved, not necessarily in that order, but some combination of it for sure!
Hugs and Eating – excellent forms of comfort, right? It’s hard not to feel great when we are sitting around enjoying the company of people we love and in the presence of eating great food! Better yet, when the food is cooked for me and Mr. (who normally does the cooking) while we get to sit and enjoy the anticipation, waiting to fill our tummies and while we’re listening to the stories around the table.
We enjoyed a whirlwind weekend with our kids in Middleton, WI, and of course, it included hugs and food. I’m slightly embarrassed about how much food, but…you only live once, right?
For the first time in I can’t tell you how long, I ate pie for lunch. Glorious, fluffy, lemon meringue pie!
That was the day after I ate a huge veggie burger with some sweet potato fries…made by the chef at Freehouse Pub! Oh, my…(Mr.’s burger looked tasty too!)
But…this lemon meringue pie was delicious. And, of course, I ate bites of other pies too, we’re a sharing kind of family.
Sometimes, you just have to indulge. And if you want pie, Hubbard Avenue Diner a great restaurant. It’s busy around lunch time, so plan on waiting…(a long time) but the pie is worth the wait!
Indulging in sweet treats, in moderation, is okay, and, as the Danish say, “Pie is very ‘hygge’.” And to eat pie in the company of people you love is even better.
Our weekend with our kids filled me with food and warm, hygge feelings. Mr. and I stopped for a hug on the railroad tracks (…yeah, it was on purpose, for the silhouette picture for the ‘hug’ challenge day #8…!)
It was so fun to spend time with our kids, walking around and enjoying each others company.
We gave each other lots of hugs, and they posed for the obligatory, “Wait, I want a picture of you two before we go home!”
We all went our separate ways and as we drove away, I said to Mr. “I think I’m getting better at this empty nest thing. No tears this time!”
Mr.: “Yes, you are.”
Me: “It’s easier when we get to see them in their own worlds, enjoying their lives, and doing so well…without us.”
Mr: “Yes, it is.”
Me: “I’m so proud of them.”
Mr: “Me, too!”
Me: “Let’s be spontaneous. What do you say about stopping at a winery on the way home? If the wine is good, we can buy a bottle of it. And, let’s not worry too much about dinner, we can enjoy that bottle of wine, cut up some meat, serve it with cheese and crackers and celebrate our empty nest.”
Mr: “Perfect idea, I agree, this weekend is a cause to celebrate.”
And, Mr., of course, waited to eat while I took the obligatory picture to capture the moment! He’s such a keeper and so hug-worthy!
#31SRW – 31 Day Photography Challenge (Rules here) – Day 8 Hugs and Day 9 Eating (combining two, ‘cuz that’s what you can do when you’re behind on posts too!)
PS – Do you love pie too, and eat it in moderation, once every 30 years or so? What are your favorite hug-worthy moments? Stop back again, I’ve got some winery stories brewing from our adventures this past weekend! Stay tuned, and thanks for stopping by to read and share your thoughts!
I’ve been known to eat cake for breakfast before, with chiding from the young ones LOL! Only when it’s leftover birthday cake because, who DOESN’T like cake for breakfast! Sounds like you had such a lovely weekend, and btw, that veggie burger looks DELICIOUS!!!! I’m a big fan of veggie burgers!
Thank you for sharing your sweet confessions! 🙂 Yes, it was a great weekend, and yes, that burger was delicious! I always try the veggie burgers, just to see if anyone makes them different than what I’ve tried before. This one was great!
What a lovely post and what a lovely family. I could feel your joy in your writing. I’m impressed with the way you’re beginning to enjoy and appreciate being an empty nester. I struggle with it more than you do because the little “cocoon” family I once had feels so spread apart and different now. It’s a long road for me.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. There are days when it is tough, but I’m finding the leaving part easier. We always try to plan our next get together before parting so that sometimes makes it easier…! It is a long road, with many turns, hope you find a nice turn soon. 🙂
Thanks Shelley. Great idea–planning the next time you’ll meet when you need to say good-bye.
Such a heart-warming story Shelley! Isn’t time with family even more precious and enjoyable when you’ve had time apart? 4″‘s for your silhouette photo!
Thank you, Marie, so nice to hear from you!! Yes, family time is precious! Thanks for scoring the photo, too! :-)!!
That pie looks yummy! How can you eat real good food and stay slim? 😉
LOL – I skip the burger and fries eaten with pie and eat the pie alone? ;-)!
Haha. I’m suddenly craving a pie lol.
I wouldn’t recommend it as a diet staple, but once every 30 years, it’s fun to eat it for lunch!
Yeah lol especially with me. I only look at the food and it makes me feel bloated already!
Oh…yeah, that can happen too, another encouragement to only eat pie every 30 years! LOL!
Lol!
