Adventures

Ah, yes, now spring is officially here

It’s not quiet here this morning as the sun rises.  The songbirds are singing up a storm.  Red in the morning, sailors take warning.  The orange glows in the sky indicate the heat of spring is here, too.

Yeah, we know, after a nice hot day or two in the spring, we’ll likely have a stormy weekend.  The birds singing their songs reminds me it’s important not to waste any time inside when the weather is nice.

Yesterday, it was hot here.  No complaining though – we can’t do that, we’ve waited for this weather for over half a year!!!  And I refused to turn on the air conditioner.

The warmth of spring has caused buds on flowers and trees to open up and remaining songbirds to return to the area.

When Mr. places the oranges out on the deck, we wait for the final bird species to arrive.  Not only have House Finches been munching away, but our other favorite colorful bird finally arrived to take its turn dipping its beak into the orange placed ever so cleverly on the simple but effective holding stand.

Baltimore Oriole’s are gorgeously colored birds.  Easy to spot because they are bright like the oranges.  We don’t have orange trees here in Wisconsin, so when there’s color mixed in with the green, I take notice.

They are finicky birds – skittish too – hard to catch on camera until they get used to us being around them.  They fly back and forth and land in the tree to sing a song before they fly off to the next spot. (See it in the lower left-hand corner…!)

Their song is so fun to listen to.  I have my window open, listening to the real one in the yard.  It started singing back to me as I played this video I found on YouTube.

That’s it, I’ve got nothing more to say.  No more to the post?  Nope?  WTH?

Well, obviously, I’m feeling a bit skittish too.  I must be off to wander about in the yard to see what’s strutting about.

Or maybe I’ll just sit outside and enjoy the morning light.  Or take a walk and wonder when any other creatures will appear.

Post Inspiration – Spring

PS – Which songbird do you love to listen to?  When is the last time you just sat and listened to the birds sing?  Are you glad it’s Friday too?!

  1. Shelley, this post filled me with joy. My grandfather always said “red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.” Thanks for that memory.

When I lived in Maine, we had Baltimore Orioles. They loved our crab apple tree and that is where I put my orange halves. They are gorgeous birds. Unfortunately we do not have them here.

My favorite song is the cardinal’s. So beautiful.

    Lovely post! Thank you.

    1. Maggie – I’m so happy this post brought you fond memories and a song of joy for the day! We’ve never put the oranges in our crab apple tree, maybe we should try that?! Yes, they are gorgeous. I love the Cardinal song, too – they are currently competing in their sing off – listening to them while I work brings me joy during the day. Hope you have a great day!

    1. Thank you! I just finally caught up to speed. Your new dog is so handsome and it looks like he’s fitting in well. Happy Trails for both of you – thank you for rescuing a shelter dog, too, by the way!! xx

  2. We have lots of cardinals in the neighborhood that sing quite nicely, and robins and these little brown birds that I don’t know the name of. But, oddly enough, the bird sounds I like best are the crows, the blue jays, the mourning doves, and the hawk that lives in one of the trees in the back yard. Not exactly songbirds, but distinctive.

    1. Sounds like you have a choir of your own there! Yes, those birds are very distinctive in their ‘song’ voices. We have those here too. Glad to hear you spend time listening to them and enjoying them like me.

  3. Yes, the birds are going crazy here, too. It’s really pleasant in the morning with the windows open. We saw an oriole outside our bedroom window this week. Not sure what all the bird calls are, but they’re very active! And everything is green, green, green. We have a metal cap on our chimney (thank goodness!) and one crazy bird keeps landing there and trying to hammer into it. It’s a crazy sound, but as far as we know, he (she?) has been unsuccessful. Ha!

    1. Oh, yeah, the birds are crazy – they are getting into our garage, and a friend of mine sent me a video of a hummingbird that flew into her house when she left the patio door open. We’ve had birds come down our chimney before too – trying to catch it out of the fire place is an entertaining way to spend an evening. Good thing you’ve got a cap on yours to prevent that! The green is so fun to see, glad to hear you’re enjoying the green now too!

    1. Thank you, Alice, it’s a nice change of pace from winter! Not quite as pretty as the fence you shared from Valdosta, but I’ll take our green grass we have now over white snow for a few months more! 😉

  4. Isn’t Spring wonderful! It has sprung here as well. I just had lunch with two noisy seagulls who were positive that I should share my sandwich with them. Sadly, I did not…but they cracked me up all the same!

    1. Yes, it is wonderful. Oh, my, I’m with you there – no sandwich sharing with seagulls. They are fun to watch though. Thank you for sharing your bird story moment with me. Enjoy the weekend!!

  5. I’m hearing about this big storm that’s coming across the Midwest this weekend… sigh. I’m hoping they are wrong with their predictions of two rounds of severe weather on Sunday for us. Stringing more than a few pretty days together is just impossible anymore. But it is not Winter at least. I’ve never seen a Baltimore Oriole, but I follow Wild Birds Unlimited on Facebook (I know the owner) so they’ve alerted everyone that the Orioles as well as the Hummers have returned – the latter surprised me. I like the call of the Red-Winged Clackbird at the marsh. We don’t have them in the neighborhood. I like the robin singing, but lately it has been way before sunlight and close to my room.

    1. Yeah…the storm is here. It rained and turned everything dark and gloomy. I’m glad I have some inside projects to do ;-)! I hope the storms aren’t bad like you said they are predicted to be. At least it’s not winter is right! The Orioles are so pretty – we’ve got 6 that are here visiting us. That’s the most we’ve ever seen. The Red-Winged blackbirds are here too. Bummer about the robin by your window…!

      1. I wonder why there are more Orioles than normal – I have heard that several times. It cleared up after 1:00 p.m. and got quite bright considering it was dark and gloomy and raining very hard the entire morning. I hope these two storms tomorrow fizzle out before getting here.

        1. I’m not sure, but I’m tickled to have so many around this year. Glad it cleared up for you. It’s gloomy and raining here and cooler than normal. Maybe in June we’ll have nice weather!?

          1. I sure hope that the weather improves for June Shelley. We had torrential rain this afternoon and now we await round #2 – it has diminished somewhat as the storm will be later and no sun to fuel the fire. It was originally supposed to be severe weather, so glad for that.

          2. Me too! We had rain all day yesterday. Not torrential though, just steady. I’m glad your storms have diminished from the severe stage! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for better weather soon!

          3. The weather is iffy all week and the holiday weekend. I was trying to configure walking in the morning and errands at night, and my boss is leaving for the cabin Thursday afternoon – weather didn’t mesh with my schedule. Frustrating. Looks like I may be hunkering down a lot with the camera book. I prefer walking in the a.m., but to get steps in, I’ll go in the afternoon. This is from my go-to weather guy:

DETROIT – As mentioned Monday, we are once again going to enter an active weather pattern, but all hope is not lost. Put simply, it’s not going to rain all day every day, and with a little luck, we might even be able to salvage some of the holiday weekend.

          4. Man…your weather guy is just as reassuring as ours. You’ll be an expert at your camera before the weather guy gets the forecast right!! LOL!

    1. Hi Andrea, thank you for stopping by to say Hi and share your thoughts! Much appreciated – you have a lovely blog – so inviting, I’m happy to meet you and follow you here in the Blogosphere! Happy Weekend to you!
